The Challenge

  • To provide availability and performance monitoring of a major new e-business application.
  • Providing support staff and senior managers with service views depicting the current state of the e-business application.

The Solution

The solution was designed to meet the brief of "up to the minute application availability, performance monitoring, and reporting of the end users experiences". The solution we recommended and implemented uses:

  • IBM Tivoli Monitoring 6.1 to provide the server hardware and base OS monitoring
  • IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Databases to monitor the IBM DB2 and MS SQL databases used by the insurance application
  • Omegamon XE for Messaging which monitors the IBM Websphere MQ implementation
  • IBM Tivoli Composite Application Manager for Response Time Tracking for monitoring the performance of the application from an end users perspective
  • And finally, customised SNMP based monitoring for key network components.

All of the system and performance monitoring applications interface with the Tivoli Enterprise Portal to provide a single point of control for the solution. Customised views have been created to provide the right teams with the data that they actually need to see, management can see a traffic light view of their insurance application which displays exactly what they need to know - "Is it working or isn't it?"; whilst technical teams get a full detailed view of exactly how their applications are performing. As well as the views which display the current status, we have also created views which display the overall performance of the systems, so that administrators can see performance spikes, when the busiest periods are, and where the biggest delays are. Last but definitely not least, the automated end user performance tracking tells the support teams when users are experiencing problems BEFORE the users do - not only that, it also tells them where the problem is.

We have also provided bespoke training for the teams that will be using the Tivoli Enterprise Portal to monitor their applications, and IBM training courses (IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Administrators, IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Implementers) for the Systems Management team.
